Load Management Systems for EV Chargers

A load management system allows you to install an EV charger even when your electrical panel doesn’t have enough spare capacity for a full 40A or 50A breaker. Instead of upgrading your entire electrical service, a load management device monitors your home’s electrical usage in real time and automatically adjusts charging to keep your system within safe limits.

This technology is ideal for homes running close to their maximum load or older properties with 100-amp service. When your home is using a lot of power — for example, when your oven, dryer, or heat pump is running — the load management system temporarily reduces or pauses EV charging. As soon as the demand drops, the charger safely resumes at full speed.

Load management systems are approved, safe, and fully compliant with Canadian Electrical Code. They allow homeowners to install Level 2 EV chargers without the cost of a panel upgrade, while still protecting the electrical system from overload. This is one of the most cost-effective ways to integrate EV charging into your home when capacity is limited.

Level 2 EV Charging Times by Breaker Size

Charging speed depends on how much power your electrical system can safely deliver to the EV charger. Level 2 chargers use a dedicated 240-volt circuit, and the breaker size determines the maximum charging output. Larger breakers allow faster charging, while smaller breakers are ideal for homes with limited electrical capacity or load management systems. Here’s a straightforward breakdown of how long it takes to charge most EVs based on the circuit rating your home can support.

20A Breaker (16A Charging Output)

A Level 2 charger on a 20 amp breaker provides a steady 16A of charging output. This setup typically delivers about 10–12 km of range per hour, making it a great option for overnight charging in older homes or panels with limited capacity. Many hybrid EV owners also choose this size because the vehicle requires less power.

30A Breaker (24A Charging Output)

A 30 amp breaker provides roughly 18–22 km of range per hour. This is a popular middle-ground option for homeowners who want faster charging without upgrading their electrical panel. Many chargers, including the Tesla Wall Connector, Flo, and Grizzl-E, support this configuration.

40A Breaker (32A Charging Output – Most Common)

A 40 amp breaker delivers significantly faster charging, averaging 30–35 km of range per hour. This is one of the most common setups for full EVs and provides enough speed for most daily driving needs. Many homeowners choose this size when they want a good balance between charging time and electrical capacity.

50A Breaker (40A Charging Output)

A 50 amp breaker provides one of the fastest Level 2 charging speeds available for residential installations. At around 40–48 km of range per hour, this option is ideal for larger EV batteries or households with multiple electric vehicles. Homes often need sufficient panel capacity or a panel upgrade to support this configuration.

60A Breaker (48A Charging Output)

A 60 amp breaker provides some of the fastest Level 2 charging speeds available for residential use. With roughly 48–60 km of range per hour, this setup is ideal for larger battery EVs, households with high daily driving needs, or drivers who want near–Level 3 convenience at home. Because of the high power draw, most homes require a 200A panel, proper load calculations, and clean, code-compliant wiring to safely support this configuration. When installed correctly, a 60A circuit delivers fast, dependable charging that keeps your EV ready whenever you need it.
